Sample Module Solution

The main cause of the issue is a malicious script that is running at startup.

30 points – stopping the message from popping up every five seconds

If you open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), you can see that there is a process named “Virus” running.

Simply hitting End Task will stop the process, stop the message, and get you 30 points.

70 points – permanently removing any files related to the virus

Now that we’ve stopped the virus, we need to figure out where it’s living and how it’s starting. There are many ways for programs to start up (Services, Registry Entries, Startup Folder to name just a few). If you do some digging, you will find that the Virus is hiding in the Startup Folder. Some ways to see this:

  • Start > Run > “shell:startup”
  • Task Manager > Startup Tab > Right Click > Open File Location
  • Start > Run > “msconfig”

If you delete the virus script from C:\Users\skillsusa\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, you will earn 70 points.
